East Man & Winspit at Worth Matravers September 2016

It was perfect walking weather and we set out past the Square & Compass and took the path via East Man to Winspit, pausing to take in the panoramic views along the coast and surrounding countryside. At the bottom of the steps, we turned East along the cliff top and spent time exploring the old quarries, and encountering a very friendly Great Green Bush Cricket along the way. One of the quarries at Winspit was used as the setting for the 1979 Dr. Who feature film ‘Destiny of the Daleks’, and also for one of the episodes of Blake's 7.

We returned to the village via the track up the valley past Winspit Cottage, the home of William Jeremiah Bower (1886 – 1966) known as ‘Billy Winspit’, the last man to work in Winspit Quarry. After a rest by the duck pond, some of us enjoyed a drink outside at the Square & Compass.
